The Accent Story

Once upon a time back in 1973, a travelling salesman met a heating engineer in a Cafe in Holt. They talked about the good old days of playing in Bands. Both had retired from the mad days of “Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll”

“I miss playing” one remarked, “Me too” said the other.

“Wouldn’t it be great to get a band together and play again?”

“Yeah, just to keep our hands in”

So it came to pass, that on Wednesday 13 March 1974, Roger Woodrow (Drums), John Skinner (Guitar) got together with Mick Betts (Guitar) and Pete Motts (Bass) in an upstairs room of a hostelry known as The Romany Rye in Norwich, for a Jam.

A good time was had by all, so another meet was arranged for the following Wednesday.

The Landlord of the hostelry, having heard both sessions, said “Why don’t you come back next week and do a gig in the bar in return for the use of the room”

So it was on Wednesday 27 March 1974 that Roger, John, Mick and Pete played their first gig together . . .  and ACCENT was born.

The current line up is Roger & John, with Paul Pryde (Keyboards & Guitar) joining in 1978 and Gary Dungar (Bass & Gadgets), who joined in 1987.

When we’re asked “What sort of music do you play?” we always say “anything from George Formby to Pink Floyd!” - we do like a challenge.

Past members include Mick Betts and Pete Motts, who together with Roger Pymer, Mike Godfrey, Richard, Neil, Jim McDonald all played their part at various times. Not forgetting Nick Frankland, Jason Tyrrell, Paul & Barry Wortley to name but a few who have ‘dept’ for one or other of us.
